COHEN RECREATIONAL COMPLEX RECEIVES TWO GRANTS

The city of Chester recently received two new grants for Cohen Recreational Complex.  The first grant receives is an Illinios Department of Transporation Grant through ITEP (Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program) in the amount of $183,060.00.

The grant will help fund the Chester Walking Trail - Phase 1.  The purpose of this project is to design and construct a 3700 feet bike/pedestrian path from the Cohen Recreational Complex to Lochhead Lane.  The trail will allow an alternate path for the non-motorized traffic and will improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists to the complex.

This project is the first phase of an overall trail system throughout the City of Chester.  At this time the overall system is planned to consist of a 14 mile trail system that will connect with itself and the three existing national trails that intersect in Chester.  These three trails are the Mississippi River Trail, The American Discovery Trail and the Trans-American Trail.

The second grant received is from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources OSLAD (Open Space Land Acquisition & Development) Grant in the amount of $239,000.00 for the expansion of the Cohen Recrational Complex.

The City of Chester was selected to receive the grant for two new tennis courts, softball field lighting for the new softball fields, two soccer fields, additional walking path and to also include fitness stations and solar lighting along the path.
