Gwendy Garner, a life-long resident of Chester, was named the Citizen of the Year at the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner April 19th. Mike McClure, who nominated Gwendy, read a short biography describing Gwendy’s years of dedication to Chester. Gwendy’s enthusiasm and name is synonymous with service and consistent community involvement. This lady has been a dedicated volunteer and willing resource to our city. She was President of the Chester Women’s Club several times and currently serves as their Publicity Chairwoman; member and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Chester Area Concert Association; member of the Beta Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; chairwoman of the Annual Sacred Concert; member of the Popeye Picnic Committee (honored as Parade Marshall along with Eileen Gordon); Chairwoman of the Chester Christmas Program; 13-year member of the Cole Memorial Park Board and chairwoman of the City’s Halloween Party. Also a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church having served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, Choir member, United Methodists Women’s Club member and currently a Lay Leader. photo

As a surprise guest, Gwendy’s son, Jamie who lives in New York City, was brought to Chester by the Chamber of Commerce.
